Her music was honest. Her voice was big. She was kind to everyone. She struggled and her music reflected that. Waking up to the news of Mandisa’s passing didn’t seem real, I was wondering like others if someone had hacked K-Love’s social media and posted a cruel joke, after seeing the confirmation I was wishing it was a cruel joke.

Mandisa was a voice for those who struggled with anxiety and depression, she was the voice for those who struggled to understand God’s will. Her honestly allowed us to feel we could be honest, her music gave us hope.

I had the opportunity to speak with Mandisa a few times while Co-Hosting the Morning Show on LIFE 100.3, Todd Gale who arranged the interviews for the show knew how much of fan I was brought me in on them. While I was excited to talk about her “Grammy” she just wanted to talk about Jesus, that should tell you all you need to know about her and what she was about.

Todd Gale gave me another wonderful (fun) moment with Mandisa, somehow Todd came into possession of Mandisa’s announcement card that declared her the winner of her first Dove Award (we won’t talk about how he came into possession of it, his story to tell but please ask him), while we were at the Dove Awards in Nashville I was a able to return it to her.

This loss feels peculiarly hard and while tempting as it maybe to allow your mind to focus on the details and what that may mean for you, remember we’re all broken fallen humans who just need Jesus. Keep Jesus at the heart of things and remember to keep talking to someone. Find a friend who will listen and love you and pray with you..

RIP Mandisa.
